An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has been arrested in connection with the alleged transportation of 2,600 rounds of AK-47 live ammunition intercepted in the Ashanti Region, police have confirmed.
The suspect, identified as Assistant Immigration Control Officer I (AICO I) Ahmed Abdul Samad, was picked up following investigations into the seizure of the ammunition at a police checkpoint late last month. During interrogation, police say the officer disclosed that he previously served as a dispatch rider at the Tema Regional Immigration Headquarters before being transferred to the Paga Sector Command in June 2025.
According to investigators, Abdul Samad told police he left behind some personal belongings in Tema, including a body armour plate and a pair of old black long boots. He allegedly stated that on December 26, 2025, he contacted another immigration officer, identified only as Isaac, who is stationed at the Immigration Headquarters in Accra, to send the items to him.
The items were reportedly transported the following day through an OA Bus with registration number GT 5771-18, driven by a man identified as Charles Brown. Police say the parcel was said to contain a body armour plate, long black boots, a ballistic helmet, an electric diffuser and a disco bulb.
Investigators further indicated that arrangements had allegedly been made for a man identified as Siso, based in Walewale, to receive the parcel on December 27, 2025. However, Abdul Samad later learnt that the consignment had been intercepted and that arrests had been made.
Police say the suspect is currently in custody assisting with investigations, while efforts continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the transportation of the ammunition and determine whether other persons may be involved. Authorities have not ruled out further arrests as inquiries continue.
