Health Quarters Ghana, a social enterprise promoting health and wellness through digital content creation, has donated a set of Hospital equipment valued at about GH¢50,000 to the Palliative and Geriatric Units of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
The equipment include crank beds with accessories, pulse oximeters, BP apparatus, advanced wheelchairs and gun thermometers to aid the care and treatment of the aged and terminally ill.
The donation was sponsored by McSarpong Medical Equipment and Supplies Limited; one of Ghana’s rapidly expanding medical supplies companies.
Donating the items on behalf of the two organizations, the Project Lead of Health Quarters Ghana, Dr Gideon Assan, said the gesture is intended to make practical the organization’s advocacy on the promotion of health and wellbeing by supporting medical facilities to deliver on their mandate of providing quality health care for patients.
“At Health Quarters, our focus has been to find innovative ways to make the Ghanaian people health conscious and to educate them about their health. But we know that it is these health facilities who ultimately become the caregivers and the leading institutions for safeguarding our health care so we thought it important to move beyond the education on social media and on TV to mobilize equipment for them to be able to provide quality care for all of us. We are grateful for the generous support of our partners on this donation, McSarpong Medical Supplies, who bought into the idea and made this possible, ” Dr Assan remarked.
Receiving the items with his Management team, Dr George Bediako Nketiah, Consultant Family Physician Specialist and Head of Department of the Korle Bu Polyclinic, commmended Health Quarters Ghana for the intitiave and called for philanthropy and stakeholder support to enable the facility modernize and expand their Palliative and Geriatric Units to better serve patients.
“In fact, it was as if you were listening to our prayers. We are currently working on expanding the Palliative and Geriatric Units and so these equipment is a welcome beginning point. We already have our drawings and estimates and we are glad to share with interested partners. With corporate Ghana’s support, we can transform our Palliative and Geriatric Units into a modern centre to better serve the needs of our patients. This is where we provide the best of palliative and geriatric care in Ghana and as you know, we are all going to grow old or can be affected by one terminal illness or the other and so we have a collective responsibility to put this place in good shape. This is a commendable gesture as it falls in line with our expansion initiative and we humbly appeal to philanthropist and other institutions to support us, ” Dr Nketiah said.
In attendance to support the donation was a leading member of the Health Quarters Ghana team, comic actor Clemento Suarez, together with other volunteers made up of different professionals who all support the organization in diverse ways.
A tour of the Palliative and Geriatric Units of the Hospital revealed a deplorable state of affairs needing immediate stakeholder and philanthropy support to rehabilitate, expand and re-equip these critical units of the Hospital.
