Dr Mark Assibey Yeboah has explained his support for Kennedy Agyapong’s flagbearer ambition, arguing that jobs and illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, will dominate Ghana’s next general election.
Speaking in a media discussion, Dr Assibey Yeboah said he believes the upcoming polls will be shaped largely by employment creation and the fight against galamsey. He said Mr Agyapong’s consistent emphasis on agriculture, agro-processing and industrialisation aligns with the urgent needs of the country’s growing unemployed youth population.
According to the economist, Mr Agyapong’s message stands out because it is pragmatic and grounded in lived realities rather than abstract economic theory. He said the former lawmaker’s focus on job creation through agriculture and value addition offers a credible pathway to economic transition and sustainable employment.
Dr Assibey Yeboah contrasted this approach with previous campaign themes, noting that while digitalisation dominated the last election cycle, the current moment demands a stronger focus on industrialisation and job creation.
He also pointed to Ken Agyapong’s reputation for discipline as a key reason for his support, particularly on the issue of galamsey. Dr Assibey Yeboah said he believes Ken Agyapong is uniquely positioned among potential candidates to convince Ghanaians that illegal mining can be curbed.
“If Kennedy says he will stop galamsey, people will believe him,” he said, adding that even those engaged in illegal mining would take the warning seriously.
He described Mr Agyapong as honest, disciplined and driven by solutions that resonate with ordinary Ghanaians.
