The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has intensified its campaign against illegal mining, disrupting galamsey activities in the Western Region.
On Saturday, 17th January 2026, intelligence-led operations conducted by NAIMOS targeted two illegal mining sites at Mensah-Krom, Wassa Akropong, reportedly operated by Chinese nationals. The operation was part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on illicit mining across galamsey-prone areas in the country.
Upon arrival at the first site, the task force observed two excavators actively engaged in illegal mining. On sighting the operatives, two Chinese nationals and five local miners fled into the nearby bush, abandoning their machinery. NAIMOS officers conducted a thorough search of the surrounding area, but none of the suspects were apprehended.
The agency emphasised that such intelligence-led interventions are central to its mission of curbing illegal mining activities, protecting the environment, and upholding the law. NAIMOS reiterated its commitment to continue disrupting galamsey operations nationwide and urged all communities to support its activities.
The Western Region, known for its mineral wealth, remains a focal point in Ghana’s ongoing battle against illegal mining.
