The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has successfully closed down galamsey operations polluting the River Bisi in the Ahafo Region.
On Monday, 19th January 2026, between 5:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., an intelligence-led operation by NAIMOS targeted illegal mining activities affecting communities under Duayaw Nkwanta, including Egya Wuradu Kuro, Egya Antwi, and Nana Etufuwaa Kuro in the Tano North Municipality. The River Bisi, a significant tributary of the Tano River, had been severely polluted, disrupting local livelihoods.
During the operation, the task force raided galamsey camps, dismantling makeshift structures and logistics bases used by the illegal miners. Equipment seized and destroyed included three heavy-duty multipurpose water pumps, gold washing platforms, generators, and washing pans.
NAIMOS highlighted that such interventions are part of its ongoing effort to curb illegal mining nationwide, safeguard water bodies, and protect the environment. The agency also engaged affected communities to assess the impact and educate residents on the dangers posed by galamsey activities.
Authorities urged local populations to support anti-galamsey operations to ensure sustainable environmental management and prevent further pollution of vital waterways.
