Ato Forson mulls judiciary’s use of 100% IGF to address needs

The Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, says he is considering the possibility of allowing the judiciary utilise 100 per cent of its internally-generated funds (IGFs) to address pressing operational needs.

He said this is part of his commitment in working with that arm of government, particularly the Ministry of Justice, “to tackle these challenges”.

Dr Ato Forson made this known after a courtesy call was paid on him by the Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.

The head of the judicial arm of government was accompanied by Justice Gabriel Pwamang, a Justice of the Supreme Court, the Acting Director of the Ghana School of Law, Prof. Raymond Atuguba, and the Minister of Justice and Attorney General Dr Dominic Ayine.

According to the Chief Justice, the visit was to express appreciation for the Ministry of Finance’s support to the judiciary.

He, however, underscored congestion in the courts as a major constraint to effective justice delivery and outlined a range of solutions currently in the pipeline to address this challenge.

He also highlighted concerns regarding the working conditions of the Judiciary.

In his response, Dr Ato Forson said: “I am committed to working closely with the Judiciary and the Ministry of Justice to tackle these challenges.”
