The President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Efua Ghartey, has expressed disappointment in the comments recently made by Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, subtly praising the current administration.
Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, having paid a courtesy call on the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) on Wednesday, September 2, remarked that the current government and the appointed Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) have performed better than the eight years of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
“Sometimes when we hear how well some state organisations are doing now, we wonder what we really have been doing in the past eight years?”
But speaking at the opening ceremony of the Ghana Bar Association Conference, Efua Ghartey said the comments left much to be desired.
“The recent commendation of a public institution and the comparison to a past government output by no mean a person than the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana left much to be desired,” she stated.
“We do not want to believe that what happened is a fulfillment of Matthew 12:34,” she added.
She explained that the Chief Justice was probably pouring out what was in his heart for a while now.
She alluded to the explanation offered by the Judicial Secretary on the comments by the head of the judicial arm of government, describing it as “lacklustre”.
She admonished members of the judiciary to stay within their bounds as per the stipulation in the 1992 Constitution.
“The guarded must stay within their bounds as dictated by their calling in the Constitution.”
