President John Dramani Mahama has called for an emergency cabinet meeting over recent troubles in the cocoa sector.
According to a post by the Minister of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 11.
It is to “address all issues affecting the cocoa sector”.
There has been a standoff between farmers and the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) regarding non-payment of purchased produce.
The farmers have threatened to a boycott as most of them are owed by the government.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of COCOBOD, Dr Randy Abbey, has, however, attributed the situation to huge debt to buyers as the country failed to meet their demand in the past.
He Haas maintained that in the 2023/24 cocoa season, for instance, the board failed to meet a contract that demanded over 330,000 tonnes.
