Parliamentary Candidate-elect of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed has been affirmed by his party for the exercise next month.
Baba Jamal will, therefore, be the party’s candidate in the by-elections on Tuesday, March 3.
This follows the submission of a report by a three-member committee set up by the party to probe allegations of inducement and vote buying in the primaries on Saturday, February 7.
Chaired by party stalwart Kofi Totobi Quakyi, the committee was given Tuesday, February 10 to submit its report to the party.
The Majority in Parliament had called for an annulment of the results while the Presidency had recalled the eventual winner as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria.
Addressing the press at the party’s headquarters, General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey conceded there is a lacuna in the party’s constitution regarding the allegations.
“The Committee could not annul the primary because the NDC Constitution contains no provision allowing annulment of primaries,” he stated.
The party will, as a result, present Baba Jamal, a former Member of Parliament for Akwatia, as it’s candidate for the by-election.
“The decision to present Baba Jamal was influenced by time constraints, as the party must submit a candidate for the impending by-election.”
