An aspirant in the Effiduase Asokore parliamentary primary of the New Patriotic Party, Lawyer Adom Appiah, has been assaulted by some military personnel deployed to the area to provide security.
Mr Appiah who is seeking to unseat the incumbent MP, Nana Ayew Afriye, had approached Electoral Commission officials at the Effiduase South polling station to know the register being used for the Saturday polls.
The EC officials ignored him, a situation that triggered argument between him and the EC officials causing the military personnel at the polling station to give him three slaps.
“He was slapped three times and but for his car, he would have fallen down,” our correspondent, John Frimpong reported.
Mr Appiah was then dragged behind the polling station which is near a Police station where he was said to have also been gun butted, leaving him with bleeding lips.
He has since reported the incident to the police for investigations into the matter.
Snatching of voters’ register
Later at the Asokore West polling station, the register was snatched away by some men believed to be supporters of Mr Appiah.
At about 9:30 am, our correspondent reported that four cars pulled over at the polling station with about 20 people and demanded to know from the EC officials, which register was being used for the elections.
Though the EC officials were initially hesitant, they later brought out the register for the guys to take a look during which they snatched it and drove away with it.
Our correspondent said one of the four wheeled vehicle used has been identified as belonging to Mr Appiah.
The incident, our correspondent said, did not affect the elections at the polling station as all the 9 delegates had at the time cast their votes and were only waiting for the close of polls for the ballots to be counted.
