The Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon and Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, has pledged his support for the continued growth and development of the School of Engineering Sciences at the University of Ghana.
His commitment was made during an International Women’s Day engagement organised by Karpowership Ghana in partnership with the School of Engineering Sciences, which brought together female engineering students for mentorship, training, and career discussions aimed at increasing women’s participation in the engineering and energy sectors.
Addressing students and faculty at the event, Mr. Dumelo commended the University and Karpowership Ghana for creating a platform that equips young women with practical industry insights and career guidance.
“I commend Karpowership Ghana and the School of Engineering Sciences for organising this important engagement. Creating opportunities for students to interact with industry professionals is critical to preparing them for the real world of work,” he said.
Mr. Dumelo noted that while the number of women pursuing engineering continues to grow, more deliberate efforts are needed to sustain their participation and progression in the field.
“It is encouraging to see more women studying engineering, but we must continue to increase their participation and create the enabling environment for them to succeed,” he stated.
The Deputy Minister further pledged his commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen the School of Engineering Sciences and enhance opportunities for students.
“As a Member of Parliament, I am committed to supporting the School of Engineering Sciences and initiatives that promote innovation, technical training, and opportunities for students to thrive,” he said.
He also challenged the students present to pursue excellence and take advantage of opportunities that expose them to industry practice.
“I challenge the students here to aim high and excel, and I look forward to the day when the best graduating engineering student from this school is a woman,” he added.
The International Women’s Day engagement formed part of Karpowership Ghana’s efforts to promote gender inclusion and support the development of future engineering talent through industry-academia collaboration.
The programme included keynote addresses, panel discussions, and training sessions on personal branding and financial literacy to equip students with both technical and professional development skills.
The initiative also aligns with broader efforts to strengthen engineering education and encourage more women to pursue careers in the energy sector.
