Management of Ghana Water Limited has announced the commencement of controlled spillage operations at the Weija Dam, after the water level in the dam rose above its maximum operating level of 48 feet.
In a statement dated Wednesday, May 27, Ghana Water Ltd confirmed that all spill gates of the dam have been opened to allow for the controlled release of excess water, a measure described by state’s water-distributing firm as necessary to safeguard the structural integrity and safety of the dam.
The controlled spilling of the Weija Dam is not an unusual occurrence.
According to management, the exercise is carried out every year during the rainy season whenever the water level exceeds 45 feet, as a precautionary measure to prevent undue pressure on the dam and avert any potential disaster.
The situation, however, is expected to persist for an extended period as the Ghana Meteorological Agency has forecast further torrential rains upstream, which is likely to result in increased inflows into the dam area.
Ghana Water Ltd, therefore, warns that the spilling exercise will continue until the water level recedes to a safe and appreciable operating level, a process that could last several months depending on rainfall patterns and inflow volumes.
In light of the development, the company has issued a strong advisory to residents living along the course of the river downstream of the dam, urging them to evacuate from vulnerable areas immediately to forestall any eventuality and ensure the safety of lives and property.
Ghana Water Ltd also disclosed that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and various District Assemblies are making plans to clear structures and obstructions that hinder the free flow of water into the sea.
The company urged the relevant authorities to execute those actions as early as possible to minimise the risk of flooding and protect affected communities.
“Ghana Water Ltd remains committed to safeguarding the dam infrastructure while ensuring public safety at all times. The public is therefore urged to cooperate fully with all emergency directives and advisories issued by the relevant state institutions,” the statement concluded.
