Ghana Water Ltd denies withholding river turbidity data

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has denied allegations that it instructed staff to withhold data on river turbidity and pollution levels, describing the claims as untrue.

In a statement signed by the Managing Director and dated August 17, GWL responded to a video circulating on social media in which JoyNews journalist Evans Mensah alleged that GWL staff were threatened against releasing turbidity and pollution data, and that he was denied access to information at the Kwanyako treatment plant.

The company said its core mandate, under the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources, is to treat raw water and supply potable water to urban populations.

While GWL conducts internal turbidity tests during treatment and halts operations when levels exceed safe thresholds, it maintained that it does not hold official data on natural river bodies.

GWL also disputed the journalist’s account of his visit, stating that according to its official records, Mr. Mensah did not visit the Kwanyako plant.

The company further clarified that responsibility for monitoring river bodies and maintaining turbidity data rests with the Water Resources Commission (WRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), not GWL.

Addressing claims that the Presidency directed the company to withhold turbidity data, GWL described the allegation as “totally untrue”.

The statement urged the public to note the distinct mandates of GWL, WRC, and EPA, and to treat the circulating video “with a pinch of salt”.
