Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria has suspended registration for nationals wishing to return home as a result of xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
The High Commission says the decision takes effect from Tuesday, June 2.
“The temporary suspension is to enable the High Commission and the Home Affairs process and screen the large number of applications already received,” a statement issued by the High Commission said on Monday, June 1.
It noted that over 1,500 Ghanaians have registered and their verification and processing are underway.
The date of the next phase of registration “will be communicated in due course”.
The High Commission insists that repatriation of Ghanaian nationals has not ended, assuring all and sundry who have not yet registered.
It expressed appreciation to the Ghanaian community for the cooperation, patience and understanding in “ensuring a well-coordinated exercise”.
