President John Dramani Mahama has hinted at plans by government to host a major competition, particularly the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
He said his government is resolved to increasing the number of top-class stadiums to make this dream possible.
“We want, over the next few years, to have at least five stadiums in this country that can host CAF competitions properly,” he stated on Friday, July 17 when he inspected ongoing works on the Ho Sports Stadium.
“Because I’m sure that since 2008, after we hosted the AFCON, the time is almost near for us to host another AFCON.”
Ghana are set to host the 2027 U-20 AFCON but will need expanded infrastructure to host the senior tournament beit for the women or men.
President Mahama also praised the Black Stars for exceeding expectations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“The Black Stars performed admirably. Very few people gave them a chance, with many predicting they would be eliminated at the group stage. However, they defied expectations by progressing to the Round of 32.”
He wants the coach to be persuaded to stay in order to make the team one of the formidable sides a few years to come.
