Minority rejects Sammy Gyamfi’s ‘personal characterisations’

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has hit back at the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, over what it describes as personal attacks directed at members as well as the Minority Leader, in the course of his responses to questions about the financial position of GoldBod.

In a statement dated Saturday, August 22 and signed by the Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei, the Caucus said that between 17th and 22nd August 2026, Sammy Gyamfi made a series of public statements responding to questions raised by the Minority about GoldBod’s finances and the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, which GoldBod administers.

The Minority insisted that the losses associated with the programme were not invented by the party but were identified in an official report by the International Monetary Fund, “an independent and internationally respected institution, whose assessments are not lightly dismissed.”

It said it has sought, and continues to seek, a full and transparent reconciliation of GoldBod’s own audited financial statements with the losses identified in that report.

“This is a legitimate matter of parliamentary oversight of a significant public programme, and it deserves a straightforward answer, not a dispute over who is entitled to ask the question,” the statement said.

The Caucus said that in the course of responding, Gyamfi had, on more than one occasion, directed personal characterisations at Members of the Minority.

“We will not respond to those characterisations in kind. We state plainly, and without qualification, that the allegations are false, and we reject them entirely,” it said, adding that legitimate scrutiny of a public institution’s operations and finances is a fundamental exercise in accountability, and no public official is entitled to mischaracterise such oversight as wrongdoing.

The Minority further noted that public office in Ghana carries defined standards of civility, restraint, and respect, as set out in the country’s Code of Conduct and Ethics for political appointees.

It said it expects every public official, including the CEO of GoldBod, to be held to those standards, and would pursue the appropriate institutional channels available to it in that regard.

The Caucus reaffirmed its commitment to raising legitimate questions about the management of public assets in a factual and measured manner, and called on GoldBod to appear before a Parliamentary Inquiry to account fully for the losses identified in the IMF’s report and reconcile them with its own audited financial statements.

“So that the public record can be settled by facts, tested under parliamentary scrutiny, rather than by accusation on either side. We will continue to update the public as this matter progresses,” the statement concluded.
