The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, has revealed that illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, accounts for about 25 percent of fibre cuts in the country.
This, he said, contributes to poor mobile network service in some parts of the country.
Speaking during his turn at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, September 7, Sam George further revealed that road construction also accounts for about 45 percent of the fibre cuts.
“But we have a coordinated path to network resilience,” he told the press after fears grew about the long-term effect of the cuts.
He said his is not to poor out in lamentations but to open up on what the challenge is and the solutions put in place.
“The NCA is leading a framework requiring road agencies and contractors to interface with our telecom operators before excavation works begin.”
He said in some cases, floods devastate fibre cables and it takes the procurement of new generators to restore network.
The Ningo-Prampram Member of Parliament also revealed that there will a fibre chamber to be made available “so that our fibre is not scattered all over”.
