President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has directed the Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, to engage the Ghana Education Service (GES) to reconsider its decision to ban some 14 students from completing their final exams.
The GES on Friday, August 7 announced the dismissal of these students, who were engaged in various violations including raining insults on the president of the republic.
They were to also banned from the ongoing West African Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The students are from Sekondi College, whose PTA Chairman has apologised to the president, Tweneboa Kodua SHS, Battor SHS and Juaben SHS.
Other schools including Ndewura Jakpa SHS and Bright SHS recorded riots, resulting in vandalisation of some school properties.
But in a statement issued by the Head of Communications at the Presidency on Sunday, President Akufo-Addo wants the children to be given a “second chance”.
“Even though the acts of indiscipline undertaken by these students are intolerable, acts which have led to their subsequent dismissal from school, President Akufo-Addo is of the firm view that dismissal alone is enough punishment, and will serve as enough deterrent against future acts of indiscipline.
“The President believes that everyone deserves a second chance in life, and is thus, hopeful that the students will be allowed by the GES to take their final examinations as scheduled.”
He insisted that all other punishment should remain in place.
