Twenty-seven out of the total of 38 workers at the Savelugu-Nanton Municipal Assembly failed to show up on Friday as the entrance to the assembly was locked up by some aggrieved members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the municipality.
A visit by 3news.com revealed that the workers including the secretary at the office of the Municipal Chief Executive were absent as for fear of their lives.
The Coordinating Director, Braimah Basintale, confirmed the number but said he has placed calls to the absentees to report to office.
At least 20 police officers have been stationed at the Assembly’s premises to prevent any unforeseen encounters.
Some protesters on Wednesday and Thursday stormed the office of the Assembly, demanding the resignation of the Municipal Chief Executive, Hajia Aishetu Seidu.
The group climaxed its protest by closing up the entrance of the Assembly, preventing workers’ entry and those who had reported before the closure were not able to step out.
It took the presence of a police-cum-military squad to disperse the angry youth after they engaged in a battle with the police before the arrival of the military team from the Northern Regional headquarters.
Meanwhile, a press conference has been held by concerned citizens of Savelugu in response to the many press conferences held by the aggrieved parties, resisting her appointment and subsequent confirmation by assembly members.
The press conference among other things called on all well-meaning residents of Savelugu and Nanton to give the MCE a chance to prove herself adding, “Hajia Ayishetu Seidu’s position wasn’t gifted her as concocted by some people”.
“She and a formidable team behind her fought to assume the office. So as natives, let’s give recognition to this fact and help her to build for us the community we have envisaged.”
The group also cautioned the aggrieved parties who have resorted to confrontations and violence to desist from it as their postures can cause apathy and disaffection for the party and government, underscoring the need to prove to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that they are more united.
