The sip of a local fruit juice, Kalyppo, by Nana Akufo-Addo that ignited an overwhelming social media craze among Ghanaians, has triggered what appears to be a counter by the presidential nominee of the Convention People’s Party, Ivor Greenstreet.
A photo of the three-time New Patriotic Party presidential nominee sipping Kalyppo, a popular drinks among kid, surfaced on social media earlier this week causing some Ghanaians, particularly supporters of the NPP to take photos of themselves mimicking the unique act.
Since Thursday, the craze that has become a free promotion for manufacturers of the drink, has culminated in a #KalyppoChallenge on Facebook and Twitter.
Presidential running mate of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumiah as well as Freddy Blay and John Boadu who are Chairman and acting General secretary respectively, plus a host of others including the president of IMANI Ghana, Franklin Cudjoe, have all joined the bandwagon.
#CoconutChallenge sets in
But just when the craze appeared to be reaching its peak, a photo of Mr Greenstreet sipping fresh coconut surfaced on social media Friday with an accompanying caption that seeks to downplay the act by his political opponent, Nana Akufo-Addo.
The photo of Mr Greenstreet drinking the coconut beside a heap of the fruit on a cart, popularly known as ‘trog’, was posted by the CPP’s onetime National Youth Organiser, James Kwabena Bomfeh Friday morning.
“Nature and natural things always offer us the best….. We need to care for our environment and ensure that we get the best from what the good Lord has endowed us……. Get Kube! Get Coconut! Go Ghana, Go Green! Go Greenstreet!!!!” he captioned the photo which has since received mixed reaction.
Some people who commented and re-shared the post held the view the act by the CPP’s nominee was to rubbish Nana Akufo-Addo’s #KalyppoChallenge while others held otherwise, and rallied people round Mr Greenstreet.
Meanwhile, it appears the #CoconutChallenge has failed to receive acceptance to rival Nana Akufo-Addo’s #KalyppoChallenge.
