A civil group pushing for Ghana’s ratification of a military cooperation agreement with the US to be overturned says President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has energized them to ensure the controversial agreement is cancelled.
The group, Ghana First Patriotic Front, says President Akufo-Addo disappointed its members in his address to the nation on the controversial agreement ratified by parliament on March 23 despite criticisms from Ghanaians including security experts.

“Honestly, the president disappointed us yesterday. He has only given energy to [our] cause,” convener of the group, Edem Abgana told 3FM’s Winston Amoah.
He said the group has gained impetus to continue with its demonstrations, which he said would “go to the deep, we will go down to the people in every region, district” to let them understand the kind of agreement that their government has signed on their behalf.
President Akufo-Addo had in his Thursday night address dismissed claims the agreement would allow for the establishment of a US military base in Ghana, an act which many claimed was a calculated move by the NPP government to compromise the sovereignty of the country.

He had also explained that his government was motivated to continue the military cooperation agreement with the United States of America due to the increasing threat posed by terrorist activities.

But Mr. Agbana expressed the disappointment of the group, saying “I was very, very, very disappointed to say the least, in the content and the manner in which the president addressed the issues”.
The group, he said was the expecting the president to “prioritize Ghana, put Ghana first and actually speak to the nation” but in their view, the address was what he described as “un-presidential”.
Mr. Agbana said the president rather chose the same path as his ministers to do propaganda, something he observed would give the group enough reasons to continue their demonstration across the country.
The group had earlier staged its first demonstration in Accra on the agreement which attracted key politicians from the National Democratic Congress.
The group has serve notice to replicate the demonstration in the other regional capitals starting from Tamale.
