Former President John Dramani Mahama has weighed into the public discourse on happenings within the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC).
Over the last fortnight, the top hierarchy of the Commission has seen the removal of Charlotte Osei and two other commissioners – Georgina Opoku Amankwah and Dr Amadu Sulley – who served as her deputies.
On Monday, July 23, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo nominated Jean Mensa to replace Mrs Osei.
By a statement from his office, the president also appointed Samuel Tettey and Dr Bossman Asare to replace Ms Amankwa and Dr Sulley.
Lawyer Adwoa Asuama Abrefa was named onto the Commission to replace Pauline Dadzawa, who retired in April this year.
But the happenings have been described as “regrettable” by the former president.
Taking to Twitter after he arrived in Zimbabwe to observe the south African country’s elections as Head of the Commonwealth Observer Group, Mr Mahama wrote that the development at the EC “carries a potential to erode Ghana’s democratic credentials”.

Already, his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected the President’s nomination of Jean Mensa.
