The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has supported about 919 displaced rain disaster victims at Kolgo in the Kasena Nankana East Municipality of the Upper East Region with relief items.

The victims received food staffs including rice, and cooking oil the rest include mattresses, blankets, buckets, drinking cups, mosquito nets used clothes and drugs among others to support them as their homes has collapse by the floods from the recent rains in the area.

About 113 victims out of the 919 had their homes completely pulled down by the rains and are currently been housed at some of the basic schools in the area, 67 victims are sleeping at the kolgo basic primary school while 46 are sleeping at the Zuo primary school.

Jerry Asamani, the Upper East Regional NADMO Director who presented the items to the victims through the Kasena Nankana East Municipal Chief Executive William Adum at Kolgo, noted that government was much concerned about their plight and how nature has render them homeless and that it was committed to ensuring that it would continue to support in promoting their welfare.

Mr Asamani said the cause of their predicament was as a result of the rivers unable to take in more water due to the spillage of the Bagre dam in the Burkina Faso and so when the rains comes they have nowhere to go than to flood the lands.

Mr Asamani announced that even though some farm lands has been submerged and could be a food security threat in the area no lives has lost and that effort were been made to ensure everyone in the water disaster prone areas were safe.

He called on all to remain calm and stay away from flood areas, by moving to high grounds to ensure no one was carried away by the high waters.

Paul Wooma, the Upper East Regional Director in charge of Operations, disclosed that based on a rapid survey by NADMO, some farm lands in some parts of the region including the Bawku west, Bawku municipality, Binduri, and the Talensi districts were submerged.

Mr Wooma hinted that a detailed survey would be carried out when flood waters recede to ascertain the extent of damage to crops such as rice, maize among others.

Abu Ramadan, the  Deputy Director General in charge of Operations at the NADMO headquarters, mentioned that as 1:00 pm the water level has risen to 870 centimeters and that NADMO has responded to the raise of water level and has allocated two spillage boats for the Upper East, Northern and Upper West Regions  to support operations.

Mr Ramadan said so far it has been four days into the spillage and there has been monitoring to ensure that lives and properties were not lost, indicating that the Bagre dam spill about 96,000 gallons per seconds and this indicates that the water level coming was very high.

The team later visited the Tono irrigational dam at Navrongo to ascertain the level of water, but the water level at the dam was very high making it to spill and submerged farm lands in the area and beyond.
