Morocco will seek to be the first team to make it to the quarter-final at AFCON 2019

The newly-introduced Round of 16 in the Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to begin on Friday, July 5 at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo, Egypt.

The Atlas Lions of Morocco will take on the Squirrels of Benin in one of the three north-versus-west Africa clashes. Algeria will take on Guinea and Ghana play Tunisia in the other clashes.

CAF expanded the Cup of Nations this year and that saw the introduction of an additional knock-out round to precede the quarter-finals.

The tournament saw 24 nations participating for the first time, from the previous 16.

This saw, for the first time all the past winners taking part in a tournament hosted by record-winners Egypt after closest followers Cameroon – with five titles to their credit – were stripped of the hosting rights.

After the Morocco-Benin game kick-starts the Round, Senegal and Uganda will play at the Cairo International Stadium in the next encounter.

There are other mouth-watering clashes to look forward to in the Round of 16.

Round of 16 matches:

Friday, July 5

Morocco V Benin

Uganda V Senegal

Saturday, July 6

Nigeria V Cameroon

Egypt V South Africa

Sunday, July 7

Madagascar V DR Congo

Algeria V Guinea

Monday, July 8

Mali V Cote d’Ivoire

Ghana V Tunisia
