President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says the “poorest of the poor” Ghanaians will have their electricity bills for the next three months absorbed by government.

This comes after he announced the absorption of water bills for April, May and June for all Ghanaians in his last address on Sunday, April 5 as part of efforts to mitigate the effect of the lockdown on citizens.

“Government will fully absorb electricity bills for the poorest of the poor. ie for all lifeline consumers,” President Akufo-Addo announced on Thursday in his sixth nationwide broadcast..

“It is free electricity for persons who consume 0 – 50KW a month for this period.”

But those who consume electricity beyond the lifeline threshold will rather have half their bills paid for by government fro the next three months. The March bill be used as benchmark.

“For example, if your electricity bill was GH¢100, you will pay only GH¢50 with government absorbing the remaining GH¢50,” the president cited.

“This is being done to support industries, enterprises and the service sector in these difficult times and to provide some relief to households for lost income.”

He, however, urged consumers “to exercise discipline in their use of water and electricity”.

Ghana has so far recorded 378 cases of Covid-19.

Citizens movement have been marginally restricted in Accra and Kumasi and their adjoining communities while a sensitisation campaign is ongoing to observe the precautionary protocols in not contracting the disease.

So far, six persons have died from the disease in Ghana.
