A Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Jonathan Asante Otchere, is calling for an urgent probe into the activities of the current Commissioners of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC). In the year 1996 election, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost woefully with just 10.2% of the total vote cast in the Asuogyaman Constituency in the Eastern Region with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) winning with a whopping 51.4%. Despite a further reduction in Ghana’s Covid-19 active cases, nine persons have lost the battle to the disease. The number of deaths, therefore, has risen from 206 to 215. This was contained in the latest update released by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) on Sunday, August 9. There were 470 new cases recorded, taking the country’s total cumulative cases to 41,003. The recoveries-cum-discharges are currently 38,330. This has seen the active cases reduce from 2,625 to 2,458. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has directed the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to initiate a process to ensure that Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi and Likpe in the Oti Region are joined into a district. The four communities are currently a part of the Jasikan District but following the creation of the Oti Region, President Akufo-Addo wants them to have their own local government status. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has directed the Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, to engage the Ghana Education Service (GES) to reconsider its decision to ban some 14 students from completing their final exams. The GES on Friday, August 7 announced the dismissal of these students, who were engaged in various violations including raining insults on the president of the republic. They were to also banned from the ongoing West African Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
