He secured 25 out of the 26 votes to emerge victorious. The Shama District Assembly has been without a Presiding Member for the past seven months. In the fiercely contested elections, Mr Ackon in the first round had 13 votes while the other aspirant, Assembly Member for Aboadze Emmanuel Amevor, had 12 Votes. It took the timely intervention of some traditional authorities to convince Mr Amevor to step down for…
South African opposition leader Julius Malema has called for the coronavirus lockdown ban on alcohol to be reimposed. The firebrand Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party leader was hitting out at President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to reopen the economy in a speech for the virtual celebrations of South Africa’s Youth Day. For two months, South Africa had one of the toughest coronavirus lockdowns in the world – with the sale of alcohol being banned. It was argued that this would limit domestic abuse, prevent violence and ease pressure on hospitals during the lockdown. A rise in violent crime has been linked…
The Presidential Candidate of the Convention People Party (CPP) in the 2012 elections, Dr Michael Abu Sakara Foster, has called for an amendment to the 1992 constitution especially the aspect that deals with elections in Ghana. He told Alfred Ocansey on 3FM’s morning show, Sunrise, Tuesday, June 16 that the constitution has entrusted political power into the hands of a few people who win elections to form a central government. This development, he explained, has resulted in the bitterness and acrimony associated with election defeats in Ghana. He further noted that the winner-takes-all aspect of the constitution has been a…
Executive Secretary of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Ghana Lucia Addae has said members of her association will pass on the cost incurred over the implementation of the Integrated Customs Management Systems (ICUMS) to the consumers. According to her, they are incurring a lot of cost following the challenges with the system. For instance, she noted that some coronavirus drugs and other vaccines have been locked up at the ports due to the challenges with ICUMS. Since June 2, all transactions related to the import and export of goods at the various ports have been conducted through the one-stop service…

He added: “Samples of all police officers…
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has responded to recent concerns raised by pressure group OccupyGhana on the management of Covid-19 in Ghana. OccupyGhana in a statement on Tuesday expressed suspicion that the Service is under-reporting Ghana’s Covid-19 figures on cases, recoveries and deaths. It said government appears to have decided to live with the virus but not made that clear to the large populace. “If the government has decided to pursue a policy of ‘living with the virus,’ then the healthcare system and the population should be prepped for this,” it said in its conclusion. “Let’s just remember that Sweden…

Introduction The rains are here and the changes in weather is gradually becoming evident. Since the outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Wuhan, Hubei Province of China, almost all regions of the world are battling with the scourge which is yet to diminish. Interestingly, most countries have reported cases across gradually-changing weather conditions amongst other public health determinants. With time, spring set in, and gradually summer is approaching, yet a good number of COVID-19 cases have been reported and…
George Floyd tested positive for COVID-19. What has that got to do with his death? Absolutely nothing! If your brother had asthma, and someone intentionally introduced smoke into his room, and he died, you would be very upset if the system said “well he had asthma, so nothing to see here”. Look up ‘Proximate Cause of Death’ and you’d find that even if Mr Floyd was carrying the plague, someone’s knee pressing on his neck for almost 9 minutes cancels out all other probable causes. Lots to discuss. This is an opinion piece. Do NOT shoot the messenger. It is…
A cheap and widely available drug called dexamethasone can help save the lives of patients who are seriously ill with coronavirus. UK experts say the low-dose steroid treatment is a major breakthrough in the fight against the deadly virus. It cut the risk of death by a third for patients on ventilators. For those on oxygen, it cut deaths by a fifth. The drug is part of the world’s biggest trial testing existing treatments to see if they also work for coronavirus. Researchers estimate that if the drug had been used to treat patients in the UK from the start…
