Four persons have become the latest casualties of the coronavirus pandemic in Ghana as the country’s case count continues to rise. From 4,012 on Friday, Ghana’s total confirmed cases of the viral disease reached 4,263 on Saturday. A total of 378 persons have recovered, leaving the active cases being managed by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) at 3,863. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has directed the Permanent Mission of Ghana to the UN and the Consulate General in New York to compile a list of Ghanaians stranded in the US who wish to be evacuated. Ghana’s coronavirus case count has shot up by 921 confirmations, from 3,091 on Wednesday, May 6 to 4,012 on Friday, May 8. This was initially believed to come from the backlog of tests conducted by the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research into Tropical Medicine (KCCR) in Kumasi. As many as 190,000 people across Africa could die in the first year of the coronavirus pandemic if crucial containment measures fail, the World Health Organization (WHO) warns. The new research also predicts a prolonged outbreak over a few years. “It likely will smoulder in transmission hot spots,” says WHO Africa head Matshidiso Moeti. This patchier and slower pattern of transmission sets Africa apart from other regions, WHO experts say. Ivory Coast has reopened bars and restaurant in all provinces except the main city, Abidjan.
