The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says the “never-ending” excuses adduced by the Akufo-Addo-led government in delaying the distribution of over 300 ambulances procured by tax-payers’ monies are not tenable. The largest opposition party says the only reason why the ambulances have not been distributed is for “cheap political gain”. In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 7 by its National Communications Officer, the NDC expressed concern as regards the delay in distributing the vehicles after President Nana Addo Dnakwa Akufo-Addo’s assurance to do so on Monday, January 6, 2020. “Even more bizarre are the new reasons given recently by the…
Pressure group OccupyGhana has called on the Auditor-General to open every sealed envelope containing declaration of assets and liabilities by public office holders. According to the group, the “secret” declaration is “unconstitutional”. These demands were made by a statement issued on Tuesday, January 7 to mark Constitution Day. OccupyGhana says one constitutional requirement that has suffered a lot of breach is Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution. It therefore called on the over 40,000 public office holders to comply forthwith. “The Constitution expressly and mandatorily requires that prescribed office holders must declare their assets and liabilities to the Auditor-General before…
The Executive Secretary of the National Teaching Council (NTC), Christian Addai-Poku, has expressed disagreement with Kwami Alorvi, a former National President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), over the latter’s views on the licensure examinations for teachers. “I am reacting first, because the content does not reflect the current realities and second, because I am made a reference point,” Mr Addai-Poku, who is also a former National President of NAGRAT, said in a statement. Mr Alorvi had written his piece titled ‘The Licensing of Teachers in Ghana: The Misunderstanding, the Misrepresentation, the Hypocrisy and Treachery’ to question the…
The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has appealed to Ghanaians to uphold the spirit of tolerance, national unity, peace, cohesion and patriotism going into this year’s general elections. In a statement issued to mark this year’s Constitution Day, the Commission said all well-meaning Ghanaians owe it as a duty to live up to “our rights and responsibilities as citizens; and strengthen our resolve to protect our national stability for posterity”. It is the second time the Day is being observed in Ghana. The Constitution Day was instituted to mark the sustenance of the Fourth Republic, which hits its 28th…
The National Ambulance Service and its Executive Director, Professor Ahmed Nuhu Zakaria, have been commended for pushing for a postponement of the commissioning of parked ambulances for Ghana’s 275 constituencies. After pressure was mounted on government to have the ambulances dispatched, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced at a meet-the-press session last year that the ambulances will be commissioned and distributed on Monday, January 6. But before a ceremony is held for the distribution, the Service had called for its postponement with the pretext that training of personnel including paramedics has not been completed while trackers have not been completely…
Harvey Weinstein has been charged with sexual assault in Los Angeles on the same day he appeared in a New York court on a separate case. The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said the charges related to the alleged sexual assault of two women in 2013. If convicted, Mr Weinstein could face up to 28 years in prison. The film producer earlier appeared in a New York court, where he faces separate charges of rape and sexual assault. He has said all his relationships were consensual but admitted that he had “caused a lot of pain”. “We believe the…
Thousands of people have marched through the streets of the Liberian capital, Monrovia, to protest against President George Weah’s handling of the economy – which has seen spiralling inflation. The demonstrators want Mr Weah to say what happened to $25m (£19m) that the government withdrew from the country’s Federal Reserve Account in 2018 in an effort to stabilise the economy. They have also called on the former football star to declare his assets before and after he became president two years ago. Mr Weah has accused opposition politicians of organising the demonstration and he called on them to focus instead…
Former Minister of Trades and Industry Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government under John Dramani Mahama built more factories than known. He cites how most of the factories secured funding and support from government agencies like the National Board for Small-Scale Industries, Export Development Bank as well as Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC). He said the New Patriotic Party’s One-District One Factory Programme pales in comparison to the over 1,000 factories created under former President Mahama. “If you are trying to look at whoever built factories and employed people, we did far more than anything…

Cheers! We all made it to 2020! This is a year we all should make a conscious effort to raise queens out of our daughters— not slaves. In this year, we ought to be intentional about how we are going to make our daughters and sisters perceive the world around them by the thoughts we sow into their minds. If we are going to have a new generation of daughters who are going to act differently, it will largely depend on the mindset they have. Their mindset is going to be formed by what they are daily told. Raising queens,…
