A day before the district level elections which was held in December last year, I wrote on Facebook praising one man. He had stood for reelection as the Assemblyman for the Atoase Electoral Area in Sunyani in the Bono Region. Isaac Yaw Brenya, affectionately known by many as Koo Zee, was again vying for the seat he had ‘sat on’ for years. “Koo Zee would even use his own money to purchase streetlights if government does not provide such. And, here is a man who could turn himself into a watchman at night to face thieves,” I wrote. Then, as…

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has responded to concerns raised by the national broadcaster over the television broadcast rights of the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League. In a statement earlier on Thursday, January 9, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) pointed out that despite submitting a bid higher in value, the GFA handed the television rights to StarTimes. GBC said it was shocked and disappointed at the announcement and feels unfairly treated especially when such a deal should be handled like a national treasure. But responding to the “misinformation” by GBC, the GFA said a total of four bids were submitted by…
Small-scale mining is still legal in Ghana and it reserved only for Ghanaians, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, said on Thursday. He said all illegal mining activities were being weeded out of the system, with many of the foreigners caught engaging in them arrested and being prosecuted, while those of West African origins had been deported. There were more than 250 registered Ghanaians currently engaged in small-scale mining, he said, adding; “So if you go somewhere and somebody is mining don’t assume it is galamsey.” Prof. Frimpong-Boateng was speaking to journalists at a media…
The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) says it was disappointed and shocked when the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced StarTimes as television rights holders for the 2019Ghana Premier League and the FA Cup. “Apart from GBC’s superior financial offer, we thought that the Premier League and FA Cup content would have been treated like a national treasure and given to the national broadcaster and a consortium of local broadcasters,” the national broadcaster said in a statement signed by Mamie Asare, the Director of Corporate Affairs. After naming StarTimes as the rights holders on Wednesday, the nation’s football governing body announced that…

Lyme disease is caused by bacteria carried by some species of ticks. Symptoms of the infection often include a rash, muscle pain, and tiredness. What did Bieber say? The strike action by Technical University Tutors Association of Ghana (TUTAG) and Technical University Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) has started biting hard at Kumasi Technical University. Students resumed on Monday, January 6 after a brief Christmas break expecting to start their end-of-semester exams on Wednesday but that is not going to happen due to the industrial action by TUTAG and TUSAAG. A visit to the campus on Thursday shows some of the students learning on their own whilst others are idling about. The various lectures halls have been placed under lock and key. Students of the University are,…
Ghana’s quest at playing a pivotal role in the oil and gas industry has received another significant boost with the design and fabrication of two topside FPSO modules at the Takoradi Port by wholly Ghanaian owned Belmet 7. The two topside FPSO modules, which are a pigging skid and a hang-off platform, are the first to be designed and fabricated in-country, since the discovery of hydrocarbons in the country. They will help address the turret-bearing challenges of FPSO Kwame Nkrumah and thereby restore it to its full operating capacity. As part of efforts to rectify the turret-bearing failure, which affected…
The National Labour Commission (NLC) has sent an urgent notice to leadership of the Technical University Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) over the recently declared strike action. The notice orders the leadership of TUSAAG to appear before the Commission on Friday. TUSAAG declared strike on Wednesday, January 8 over unpaid allowances, claiming the December salaries received by members were below those paid their colleagues in other public universities. The Association had suspended an earlier strike action declared last year after a last-minute intervention by the Commission, which gave assurances of resolving their grievances. But TUSAAG said the matters are…
