Four persons believed to be from the same family have been trapped to death in a galamsey pit at Salema near Ainyinase in the Ellembele District of the Western Region. An eye witness tells Connect FM’s OMANBAPA morning show host Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson that the incident happened late Monday, around 4pm. The pit in which they were mining is said to have caved in. There appears to be bad blood between former President Jerry John Rawlings and authorities of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) over the dismissal of some senior staff of the school, including a former Vice Chancellor Professor Mawutor Avoke. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Western Region recovered GH¢2.5 million from illegal power connections from businesses and residents in 2019. “In 2019, the revenue protection unit recovered a total of GH¢2,626,886. Out of this amount, the businesses and persons caught engaging in illegal mining have paid to ECG GH¢2,518,766. This is more than 90 per cent of the total recoveries we made.
