Former President John Dramani Mahama says the Free Senior High School Policy will not be scrapped by his administration if he returns to power in 2020. “Free SHS is here to stay,” he stressed. “Indeed, it is underpinned and guaranteed by the 1992 Constitution of Ghana and it cannot be reversed by any government.” Mr Mahama made this known on Wednesday, August 14 while addressing delegates at the 27th Annual Residential Delegates’ Congress of the Ghana National Union of Technical Students (GNUTS) held in Kumasi, Ashanti Region. This comes in the wake of assertions by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo…
US The Minority in Parliament has written to the US Ambassador to Ghana for an investigation into government’s suspension of the concession agreement with Power Distribution Services Ghana Limited (PDS). The petition was personally delivered on Wednesday, August 14 by the Ranking Member on the Committee of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. According to the petition, the Akufo-Addo-led government cannot be trusted to conduct “thorough and independent” investigations into the agreement because it “stands complicit with top functionaries and cronies”. Therefore, Ambassador Stephanie S. Sullivan can help enforce the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of the US in bringing closure to…

Ghana captain Andre Ayew hit a brace for Swansea City as they eliminated Northampton Town from the ongoing Carabao Cup on Tuesday night at the Liberty Stadium. Ayew came on as a substitute and struck two goals 8 minutes apart to salvage his side’s chances of staying in the competition after they had gone down by a goal. “That’s exactly what we know he can do. He has come back into the club after the international break in very good condition,” Swansea coach Steve Cooper said after the game. “He looks extremely motivated in training and tonight was about giving…
Minister for Education Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh says the decision by the Akufo-Addo-led government to spend the country’s oil revenues on “Free Senior High School education is a better investment than anything the country can dream of”. Speaking at the Bolgatanga Senior High School on Tuesday, August 13 as part of President Akufo-Addo’s two-day tour of the Upper East Region, Dr Opoku Prempeh noted that even before the implementation of the Free SHS policy, the President ensured that the capitation grant for basic schools was increased from GH¢4.50 that had existed in 2009 to GH¢9 in 2017. “In 2018, (President…
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for La Nkwantanang-Madina Assembly, Jenifer Dede Afagbedzi, has reiterated the assembly’s commitment to fight against indiscriminate dumping of waste at unauthorized places and along ceremonial streets. This move, according to her, falls in line with President Nana Akufo-Addo’s vision and declaration to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa. She says a lot has been done by MMDCEs in Accra in achieving the President’s dream but attitudinal change has been the hindrance. Madam Dede Afagbedzi disclosed this on Onua FM’s Mantam Mpuntuo in an interview with Nana Yaw Opare (Wofa). She appealed to the general…

The much-awaited Extraordinary Congress of the Ghana Football Association to be held under the auspices of the Normalisation Committee has been postponed to Thursday, September 5. The Congress was initially scheduled to be held on Monday, August 19 but there was ambiguity over the number of days required for such a key constitutional provision to be triggered. “The rescheduling clears any ambiguity over interpretation of relevant provisions of the GFA Statutes by stakeholders, regarding the number of days required for Extra Ordinary Congress as well as the agenda for the Extraordinary Congress as earlier communicated,” the Committee said in a…
