Algeria made a remarkable qualification to the quarter-finals of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations after beating Guinea 3-0 in the Round of 16 on Sunday. Not only did that make them bear the torch of North African hopes in the knock-out stage, aside Tunisia, but the Desert Foxes also became the only side yet to concede at the tournament. Goals from Youcef Belaili, Riyad Mahrez and Adam Ounas were enough to sink the Syli Nationale and broke the jinx of a third-placed team pulling a shocker over group toppers. Before Sunday’s Round of 16 tie played at 30 June…
Debutants Madagascar secured a historic quarter-final qualification in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday after beating former winners DR Congo 4-2 on penalties in the Round of 16. The Malagasy had led twice during normal play but the Congolese drew level on both occasions. But luck ran out for the Leopards as Barea beat them on penalties after no goals were scored in extra time. It was a cagey encounter for the two sides as the balances tilted in favour of the Congolese despite finishing third in Group A behind Egypt and Uganda. With less experience in a…

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has backed its affiliate, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), in calling for an independent investigation into the arrest, detention, and alleged torture of journalists Emmanuel Ajafor Abugri and Emmanuel Yeboah Britwum. Both journalists, who work for Ghanaian digital media ModernGhana, were arrested and charged with cybercrime on June 27, following the site’s publication of a story criticizing the national security minister. During the raid, laptops were seized from ModernGhana’s office by national security agents. National civil society organisations denounced the “Rambo style” of the raid. The journalists remained in custody for four days. After their release, they denounced…
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to take one week off his official duties from Thursday, July 11. This is part of his annual leave, a statement from the presidency said on Sunday. The Summit will launch officially the operational…
Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has been handed a huge boost as defender Jonathan Mensah declared himself fit ahead of the game against Tunisia on Monday. Mensah, who came in for the suspended John Boye for Ghana’s second group game, played a fantastic game for the Black Stars – getting on the end of everything and blocking shots from the Cameroonians. His injury after the game dealt a blow to Appiah’s defensive line. After sitting out the game against Guinea Bissau, the defender is back in training and is looking very good. “I feel very good now. I’m getting better and…
The Speaker of Parliament, Reverend Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, has been advised to investigate the circumstances that led to a proposal by the Parliamentary Service Board, which he chairs, to propose a new chamber for the House. Giving the piece of advice, Dr Alidu Seidu said the matter should not be left to die a natural death. “I think there should be a closure,” the lecturer at the University of Ghana insisted, “and this closure will serve as a lesson for the future.” The Political Scientist was speaking on TV3’s The Key Points on Saturday, July 6. This comes in…
Iran has announced it will break a limit set on uranium enrichment, in breach of the landmark 2015 nuclear deal. Deputy foreign minister Abbas Araqchi said Iran still wanted to salvage the deal but blamed European countries for failing to live up to their own commitments. The US unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018. It has since reimposed strict sanctions on Iran. The Iranian announcement marks the latest breach of the accord. In May, Iran stepped up its production of enriched uranium, which can be used to make fuel for reactors but also for nuclear weapons. The country has…

An 85th minute strike by Thembinkosi Lorch was the difference as the Bafana Bafana of South Africa shocked hosts and record champions Egypt in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations. The 74,000-seater Cairo International Stadium went dead silent as the Pharaohs were knocked out of the tournament by the less fancied South Africa. Egypt had not dropped points going into the encounter with their opponents teetering on the verge of tournament exit, having picked the last spot as one of the four best third-placed qualifiers from the group stage. As expected, the Pharaohs dominated play despite managing only 3 shots…
