The Northern Region branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken on Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia over his call for Dagombas to vote for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the 2020 elections. According to Dr Bawumia, it took President Akufo-Addo to restore peace to Dagbon after several years of conflict. The vice president was speaking at the annual Bamba Quranic recitation in Tamale over the weekend. But the NDC in the region has taken exception to the comments by the Vice President, saying he should not make political capital of the fragile peace in Dagbon. In a…
In the latest episode in the saga of where Zimbabwe’s former President Robert Mugabe will be buried, the family has reversed a decision to have him interred at Heroes Acre in the capital, Harare. Instead he will be buried in his home region of Zvimba. The location of his grave became a source of tension between the Mugabe family and the government. They blame the current leadership for Mr Mugabe’s overthrow in November 2017. He was toppled after 37 years in power and replaced by current President Emmerson Mnangagwa. At his funeral, family member Walter Chidhakwa said he had died…
Knighted Ghanaian-British architect David Frank Adjaye has justified the need for a national cathedral for Ghana and said that will be “a symbol of hope” for citizens. He has also welcomed public criticism over the siting and construction of such an edifice, saying the “naysayers” will get to know how important a national cathedral is for a country like Ghana when it is up. For him, the laying in state of Ghana’s son, Kofi Annan, for instance, at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) did not dignify such an illustrious son. “When Kofi Annan was laid in state, it was…
Rose Amoanimaa Yeboah climbed up the podium. Eyes up, looking to the skies with a sort of bewilderment and disbelief for what she had achieved. Ghana’s high jumper, aged 17, had just won gold at the Africa Games for finishing a height of 1.84m. Soon, the Ghana national anthem began ringing through the bells of live trumpets and through the well connected sound system at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. Finally, after a modest soupcon of success at the Games, it was Ghana’s moment. Fifteen hours later, the men’s relay team were in the dressing rooms holding each…

Teenager Reece James scored and set up two goals on his full debut as Chelsea thrashed League Two side Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup third round. James, 19, set up Michy Batshuayi in the seventh minute before his superb cross was tapped in by Kurt Zouma. He added Chelsea’s fifth late in the second half before Batshuayi slotted home his second goal. Chelsea’s Ross Barkley and Callum Hudson-Odoi also scored, while Grimsby’s Matt Green netted a volley. Manager Frank Lampard changed the entire starting XI following Chelsea’s defeat by Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday, but there were several…
The Okyeman Caucus within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has dissociated itself from comments made by Kwame Zu, the Ashanti Region Secretary, during the march by the Coalition for National Sovereignty last week. Kwame Zu’s comments had incensed the Okyeman Traditional Council, whose members joined a demonstration in Kyebi to call not only him but other NDC officials to order. The Council members demanded that the NDC offer ritual pacification over the comments by the party’s regional executive or risk being banned. But a statement issued by the Okyeman Caucus and signed by Coordinator Victor Smith on Wednesday, September 25…

Planned Caesarean delivery can be the safest option for women who have had a Caesarean in the past, according to new research in PLoS Medicine. Attempting a vaginal birth was linked with a small but increased chance of complications for mother and baby compared with repeat Caesareans. The findings come from more than 74,000 births in Scotland. Experts say mums-to-be should be offered a choice of how to deliver – vaginal or Caesarean – when possible. A recent investigation by the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire programme suggests this is not always happening, with many women requesting a Caesarean being denied one.…
