Dozens of people have been arrested in the South African city of Johannesburg after rioters looted shops and torched buildings and vehicles. Police fired tear gas, rubber bullets and stun grenades in an attempt to quell the unrest on Monday. Many of the targeted shops are reported to be owned by foreign nationals. But the country’s police minister, Bheki Cele, said “criminality rather than xenophobia” was to blame for the “senseless violence”. “[Xenophobia] is used as an excuse,” he told reporters after visiting the city’s Central Business District, where much of the unrest has been taking place. “Nothing… has sparked…
The police visibility programme that saw many officers on the streets of major cities in the country will be brought back, a top official has said. “Within a couple of months, there will be deployment to make the police more visible,” the official said on TV3 & 3FM’s The Key Points over the weekend. ACP David Eklu, the Director General of the Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, told host Abena Tabi that the move is one of the takeaways from a high-profile conference held in the wake of the recent killing of officers. The latest lethal attack…

Works on the construction of the Ekumfi Pineapple Factory, the first under the One-District One-Factory Programme, was commissioned by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2017. A 200-acre land was released by the chiefs and people of Ekumfi for the project. The National Coordinator for the Programme, Madam Gifty…
Andre Ayew has committed himself to Swansea City ahead of Monday’s unpredictable European transfer deadline. Ayew moved to quell rumours of a late departure from the Liberty Stadium by declaring: “I want to stay.” It’s a huge boost for the Swans with Steve Cooper’s side top of the Championship after Saturday’s tremendous 1-0 win over promotion favourites Leeds United at Elland Road. The Ghana international had been linked with a number of European clubs over the last two weeks. But despite options and offers falling at his talented feet, the versatile forward has opted to stay in south west Wales.…

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has indicated that construction of the Pwalugu dam will be the single largest investment made by any government in northern Ghana since independence. Addressing a gathering of family members, friends and sympathizers at the 40-day Adua of the late Upper West Regional Chief Imam, Alhaji Yakubu Issahaku, at Wa on Saturday, August 31, Dr. Bawumia stressed that “it is government’s objective to end the perennial flooding that occurs as a result of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso while providing irrigation and hydro power for the people of Northern Ghana”. Vice President Bawumia informed…
I have heard stories of Ghanaians who have sold all their property only to give the proceeds to a ‘connection man’ to secure them a visa abroad. I have read heart-wrenching tales of what stowaways subject themselves to all in a bid to travel abroad. Indeed, if there is anyone who has told the god of death “Not today” severally, it should be the one who has gone through the Mediterranean Sea and deserts to travel to Europe. When a man’s mind is made up to travel abroad, not even the smell of death scares him! Well, abroad is heaven―…
Confusion is erupting in the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Effutu Constituency in the Central Region as some members have petitioned leadership of the party to pursue former New Patriotic Party member, Dr. James Kofi Annan, to lead the party as Member of Parliament. According to the petitioners, Dr. Annan has high potentials in bringing development to the constituency. Leader of the group Richmond Dzanoukoe noted the NDC can only win the Effutu parliamentary seat if Dr. James Kofi Annan leads the party. “The problem the NDC in Effutu is facing is that the constituency does not have…
The EU’s lead Brexit negotiator has rejected Boris Johnson’s demands for the Irish backstop to be scrapped. Michel Barnier said the backstop – intended to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland – was the “maximum flexibility” the EU could offer. Mr Johnson has previously told the EU the arrangement must be ditched if a no-deal Brexit was to be avoided. Meanwhile, the PM has told rebel Tories they face a “fundamental choice” of siding with him or Jeremy Corbyn. His comments come as some MPs who oppose a no-deal Brexit – including Conservatives – are planning to…
