Every June 4th, Jerry John Rawlings’ 1979 coup in Ghana inspired by his Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) readily comes to mind. This year, as in previous years, the story was not different. I knew nothing substantial in history― worldwide― that occurred on the aforementioned date than Rawlings’ coup. Then, in the afternoon, as I watched Aljazeera, I heard something that was totally new to me. The anchor mentioned Tiananmen and that it was a protest which happened in Beijing, China, in 1989. The news report said many people died in that protest. After I had watched the news report,…

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has suspended the GH¢10 insurance deductions to make way for the policy to be regularized. The suspension will be in August only with deductions set to resume in September for only teachers interested in the scheme, which offers a life cover of GH¢18,000 in case of death or permanent disability. Some teachers had expressed disagreement with the reintroduction of the scheme in July and descended heavily on the Service for not informing them before effecting deductions. The scheme was formally introduced in June, 2018 but was suspended after agitations among staff. Sensitisation was intensified and…

The Ghanaian theatre industry has been bursting at its seams with great plays over the last few years. Almost every weekend at the National Theatre, there is a play showing. His recent masterpiece, I Want Your Wife, saw National Theatre overflowing with patrons on the two weekends it was shown. On Monday on his live flagship program, FOOD FOR THOUGHT, on…
The European response to the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” of illegal migration has largely been one of outrage and disgust but, is Europe any different? For many in Africa and the Middle East, Europe’s migration policies are not so different from Trump’s. Many Europeans take umbrage at Trump’s attacks. But even if they don’t subscribe to his “zero tolerance” approach to migration, European governments have also become much tougher in handling migrants, asylum seekers and even minorities already resident– a position many migration experts describe as very hypocritical. As I write this article, two boats carrying more than 500 migrants…
Tammy Abraham missed the last penalty at Istanbul’s Vodafone Arena on Wednesday night to hand Liverpool their fourth Uefa Super Cup trophy. The match played between last season’s Champions League winners and Europa League winners saw Liverpool and Chelsea play to a pulsating 2-2 draw after extra time. Olivier Giroud had opened the scores for the Blues in the first half but the Reds came from the break to clinch the equaliser through Sadio Mane, forcing the game into extra time. After just five minutes of the extra time, Mane scored again in his 19th goal in 2019. But a…
