The authorities in Nigeria’s Lagos state are searching for survivors after a boat with at least 17 people on board, capsized on Saturday night. In a statement they say they suspect that it capsized due to overloading adding that the vessel “was overturned by the heavy current”. The passenger boat had been travelling from Ajah on Lagos Island to Ikorodu on the mainland when the incident happened. The state’s Emergency Management Agency says three people have been rescued and have been taken to hospital, while the body of one of the passengers has been found. Many people in Lagos use…
Carrying more fat on legs compared with the stomach protects postmenopausal women from heart disease, a study says. Women of a healthy weight with the highest risk of stroke or heart disease had the most belly fat and the least hip and thigh fat, the European Heart Journal research found. The scientists said “apple-shaped” women should try to lose belly fat and become more “pear-shaped”. More research is needed to find out why the link exists, a heart charity said. What did the researchers do? The research followed 2,600 women who were a healthy weight – with a body mass…
The biggest casualty in the one-eighth contest of the National Science and Maths Quiz so far was recorded on Friday, June 28 as former winners St Thomas Aquinas Senior High School were ousted. The Cantonments boys failed to progress to the quarter-final after losing the final round of their contest to Achimota School. Aquinas won the contest in 2013 and finished runners-up to Prempeh College in 2017. Though overtaking Achimota School before the final round, Aquinas failed to answer any of the riddles in the final round, allowing Achimota School – who answered two on the trot – to leapfrog…
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has named Ethiopian Bamlak Tessema Weyesa as the centre referee for the second group game for Ghana and Cameroon in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations. The tough battle between the two giants, in Group F, will be played on Saturday at the Ismailia Stadium. Bamlak, 38, has so far officiated one match in the tournament. He was the man in charge of the 1-1 draw between Tunisia and Angola in Group E. He was assisted in that match by compatriot Samuel Temesgin and Sudan’s Waleed Ahmed Ali. He will, however, be assisted by…
Somewhere in 2002 at the eye clinic at the old Sunyani Municipal Hospital in the Bono Region, I sat together with persons we all shared a common problem. We all had problem(s) with our eyes in one way or the other. While we waited patiently to go see the optometrist – individually – a young man of about 28 years old walked into the eye clinic with newspapers. He was selling them. “Yes, Graphic, Ghanaian Times […],” the man announced his presence. He wanted us or perhaps any of us to buy his papers. The man, whose name I did…
The National Security Ministry has explained the circumstances that led to the arrest of two editors and the subsequent raid of the offices of media firm Modern Ghana on Thursday, June 27. The explanation, given to the President of the Ghana Journalists’ Association (GJA), justified the action taken against the online firm. Speaking on TV3’s Midday Live on Friday, GJA chief Roland Affail Monney said the sector minister told him that the action was taken against Modern Ghana for allegations of cybercrime. Mr Affail Monney explained that the media firm had been under investigation for some time now, according to…

For the best part of the decade, Jordan Ayew has divided opinion, not on his abilities as player, but on his suitability to the Black Stars. In fact, he has frustrated more times than he has excited fans. His performances worth remembering have been few and far. Rather, Jordan frustrates by holding on to the ball too long, often preferring to go solo rather than to combine with a teammate. There was a moment in Ghana’s 2-2 draw with Germany that readily comes to mind when Jordan’s name comes up. The stage is the World Cup. The setting is Fortaleza…
Accra Academy’s chase for a maiden title in the National Science and Maths Quiz began on Thursday when they came up against TI Ahmadiyya Senior High School of Fomena, Ashanti Region and Abuakwa State College at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS). It was the final one-eighth contest of the day and the Greater Accra Region school stamped their authority at the end of the race despite amassing only 2 points in the Problem of the Day segment. They trailed TI AMASS in the first round by three points but a substitution in the second round saw them close…
Daniel Asiedu, the prime suspect in the murder of the former Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North Constituency, Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu, has been declared mentally sound to face trial. A psychiatric examination conducted on Asiedu, 22, proved so. The psychiatric examination was ordered by the Accra High Court on April 14, 2019 following a prayer by Asiedu’s lawyer, Augustine Obour. Lawyer Obour had argued that he believed his client was not mentally sound. Asiedu had fingered elements in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for contracting him to kill the then lawmaker. NPP contracted me to kill JB Danquah – Suspect…
