The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced a temporary shutdown of power supply to parts of the Greater Accra Region following severe flooding that has compromised critical electricity infrastructure.
In a joint statement, the two power utility companies said the heavy rains currently being experienced across the country have caused extensive flooding at several key substations, posing serious risks to both electrical equipment and operational personnel.
“As a precautionary measure and in the interest of public safety, it has become necessary to temporarily shut down power supply from the affected facilities,” the statement read.
The companies said the decision to switch off power from the impacted substations was taken to safeguard lives, protect property, and prevent further damage to the national electricity network.
GRIDCo and ECG said they are continuously monitoring the evolving situation and conducting detailed assessments of the flood’s impact on the transmission and distribution network.
They further cautioned that additional areas may experience interruptions if flooding poses safety risks to other electricity infrastructure.
“As the heavy rains and flooding persist, the public is advised that power supply may be temporarily interrupted in other affected areas, where necessary, as a precautionary measure to protect lives, property, and critical electricity infrastructure,” the statement said.
Members of the public have been urged to exercise extreme caution and to promptly report any fallen electricity poles, exposed or downed power lines, flooded electrical installations, or any other electricity-related hazards to the nearest ECG office or through the company’s customer service channels.
The two companies apologised for the inconvenience and called for the patience and understanding of all affected customers, assuring them that every effort would be made to restore power supply as soon as weather conditions improve and it is deemed safe to do so.
