Chelsea have agreed to sell Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid, with midfielder Mateo Kovacic arriving on loan from the Spanish club. The Blues say the deal is still subject to Courtois agreeing personal terms and completing a medical. Real plan to present the 26-year-old, who will sign a six-year deal, as their new signing at 12:00 BST on Thursday. Athletic Bilbao’s Kepa Arrizabalaga is set to arrive as his replacement for £71m – a world record for a goalkeeper. And Croatia midfielder Kovacic, 24, will have a medical on Wednesday before joining on a season-long loan. He has…
Debutantes Netherlands proved a contender to win this year’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup following a 4-0 thrashing of perennial qualifiers Ghana on Wednesday. The result of the Group A game played at Vannes, France sends the Dutch girls into the quarter-final of the tournament. Ghana’s Black Princesses are all but out of the tournament, pending France’s second group game against New Zealand later on Wednesday. Though the Princesses began the day’s match the stronger of the two sides – probably owing to their 4-1 opening day loss to the hosts – it was the Dutch who made their few…
Unsuspecting persons in the Sekondi/Takoradi metropolis are falling prey to a new modus operandi that has been adopted by tricksters. Within a week, many persons have been robbed of varying sums of moneys and other valuable items including mobile phones, jewelry and laptops. With the new trick, the fraudsters pose as smartly dressed preachers with Holy Bible in their hands. They would cunningly approach their victims and request to share the word of God amidst some mysterious revelations about their personal lives and family. They would later ask the unsuspecting victims to either deposit whatever they are holding with them…
Women who have a heart attack are more likely to survive if they are treated by a female doctor in hospital, a major US study suggests. An analysis of 580,000 heart attack cases over 19 years found 13.3% died after being treated by a man compared with 12% who were cared for by a woman. Their chances were also improved if treated by a male doctor who had a lot of female colleagues in his team. One theory is that men may be worse at treating women, researchers said. Independent experts said more work was needed to see if the…
Former minister Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah has rejected reports that he endorsed former president John Dramani Mahama during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Unity Walk in Aflao. He clarified on the ‘After Hours’ show on TV3 last Friday that he rather congratulated him for having joined the previous editions. “I congratulated him in Aflao for having led the ‘Unity Walks’, which I said would lead to the NDC winning power in 2020. “But some people felt that was an endorsement of him and I’ve said ‘No’, I was thanking him for leading the Unity Walks,” he stated. The aspiring leader of…
A leading war veteran in Zimbabwe’s second city, Bulawayo, has branded ex-President Robert Mugabe a sell-out for endorsing his one-time foe Nelson Chamisa’s presidential bid in last week’s heavily disputed election, the state-linked Herald newspaper reports. Lazarus Nyoni – the provincial treasurer of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association – compared Mr Mugabe to the biblical Judas Iscariot for betraying Zanu-PF – the ruling party he helped form 55 years ago. The newspaper quoted Mr Nyoni as saying at the funeral of liberation war heroine Ketty Dube: “The highest level of deception is when a once-respected liberation war fighter…

Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, is a ghost town as most people stay indoors ahead of the release of disputed presidential election results. Troops patrolled the city centre, ordering people to “behave”. Six people were killed after Wednesday’s clashes in the city between the security forces and supporters of opposition leader Nelson Chamisa. He says Monday’s polls were being rigged to give President Emmerson Mnangagwa victory. The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) said there was “absolutely no skulduggery”, and it would begin releasing presidential results at 20:00 GMT. Mr Chamisa insists he has won, and has called on his supporters to await “mass…
Pope Francis has changed the teachings of the Catholic faith to officially oppose the death penalty in all circumstances, the Vatican has said. The Catechism of the Church, a codified doctrine which sums up teachings, had previously stated that the death penalty could be used in some cases. It now says it is “inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person”. Pope Francis has spoken out against executions in the past. Last October, he had said the Church’s policy on the death penalty was one area where teaching was not static and could change…
Head coach of Aduana Stars Kenichi Yatsuhashi is confident he has the best players and they will make it out of the group in the 2018 CAF Confederation Cup. Speaking on 3FM’s Sunrise, Kenichi Yatsuhashi said he can arrest the poor form and qualify Aduana into knock-out stages. “I think we have pretty good chances for qualifying to the next round. We are far but the points are very close and depending on conquering two matches that we play.” The two-time Ghana Premier League champions are currently third in Group A behind Raja Casablanca and AS Vita. According to the…
