The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has accused his opposite number, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and his colleagues in the Minority Caucus of being hypocritical. He revealed that under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Majority-led Parliament, about 30 bills were passed under a certificate of urgency between 2017 to 2021 and 26 other bills were also passed under same circumstances between 2021 to 2024. “It is sad that Afenyo-Markin has brought leadership of a caucus to such low levels, ” Mahama Ayariga reiterated. “Most bills that tend to be passed under a certificate of urgency are non-controversial and have often been withdrawn and…
The Majority Caucus in Parliament has dismissed recent claims by the Minority, insisting that Ghanaians have not forgotten the severe economic hardships experienced under the previous administration. According to the Majority, the Minority lacks the moral authority to criticise the current government given the state in which it left the country. The Majority recalled that Ghana’s financial system collapsed, with the Cedi depreciating at unprecedented levels and inflation soaring to historic highs. These conditions, it said, significantly eroded household incomes and plunged many families into economic distress. It further noted that critical social services deteriorated sharply, with Senior High Schools…
The Majority Caucus has defended the government’s economic record, pointing to a rapid turnaround driven by fiscal discipline, sound policy choices and strategic reforms across key sectors of the economy. It noted that by the end of 2024, critical systems such as the National Health Insurance Scheme, Free Senior High School and decentralised governance had all but collapsed due to financial mismanagement and corruption, leaving district assemblies severely underfunded. The Majority said the current government’s performance has since been acknowledged by international institutions, including the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and global credit rating agencies, citing improvements in inflation,…
The Minority in Parliament has lamented the use of brawns instead of brains by their colleagues in the Majority in many affairs of the House, saying that is affecting the work of the legislative arm of government. According to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, many motions have been passed without due diligence by members of the House due to the Majority’s abuse of its numerical advantage. Addressing the press in Accra on Monday, January 26, Mr Afenyo-Markin stressed that members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament are ready to read all motions and scrutinise documents before being passed if…
The Minority in Parliament has served notice of boycotting the official visit of the Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, to the legislative assembly. According to the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Chief Justice acted in bad faith by leaving his members to attacks from all and sundry when they decided not to be involved in his vetting. “We in the Minority don’t see him as a tolerant head of the judiciary,” Mr Afenyo-Markin said at a press conference on Monday, January 26. The presser at the DF Annan Auditorium in Parliament is to hold the government accountable after a year in…
The former Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South East, Kwame Adabo, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to continue the party’s tradition of retaining its presidential candidates after initial defeats at the polls. Addressing NPP delegates during Dr. Bawumia’s campaign engagements with delegates of his constituency, the former MP said both John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo, who all ended up being elected presidents, were retained by the party after they lost on their first attempts. He argued that the tradition ought to continue, adding that Dr Bawumia has done nothing wrong and there is no…

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has dismissed media reports that 60 percent of applicants for recruitment tested positive for HIV/AIDS. This according to the reports was obtained from the medical screening done as part of the process. However, a press release issued by GAF on Sunday, January 25 said: “The medical screening is ongoing and no results have been declared as at now.” It described the reports as fake, promising “to trace the originators of the mischievous content”. “The Ghana Armed Forces once again urges media practitioners especially content creators and bloggers/vloggers to be circumspect and crosscheck their facts before…
