A suit brought before an Accra High Court by relegated Ghana Premier League side Great Olympics has been dismissed. The Accra-based side had prayed the court to overturn a Ghana Football Associaton (GFA) Disciplinary Committee decision relegating them instead of Bechem United. Great Olympics served the Premier League Board the writ on Monday, February, forcing a cancellation of the launch of the 2017/2018 league same day. The case was first heard on Tuesday, February 13 but was adjourned to Wednesday, February 21 after the plaintiff demanded more time to study the response of the defense counsel. In Court on Wednesday,…
I almost died after giving birth to my daughter, Olympia. Yet I consider myself fortunate. While I had a pretty easy pregnancy, my daughter was born by emergency C-section after her heart rate dropped dramatically during contractions. The surgery went smoothly. Before I knew it, Olympia was in my arms. It was the most amazing feeling I’ve ever experienced in my life. But what followed just 24 hours after giving birth were six days of uncertainty. It began with a pulmonary embolism, which is a condition in which one or more arteries in the lungs becomes blocked by a blood…
In our series of letters from Africa, Zimbabwean journalist-turned-barrister Brian Hungwe considers the fate of ousted President Robert Mugabe as he celebrates his 94th birthday. A famous quote by Machiavelli advises politicians: “It is better to be feared than loved – if you cannot have both.” However, the Italian Renaissance author and statesman then warns that if a ruler chooses fear, it is best not to be extreme – as unnecessary cruelty will never win life-long loyalty. During Mr Mugabe’s rule in Zimbabwe, he enjoyed great prestige and high honour. He personified the state he led for almost four decades…
More than 5,000 people have attended the burial of Zimbabwe’s opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai in his home village after he died of colon cancer. The burial was marred by divisions in the party he formed and led, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). Crowds booed two leaders challenging the appointment of Nelson Chamisa as the party’s acting president. Mr Tsvangirai, a fierce opponent of Zanu-PF’s 37-year rule, died of colon cancer on 14 February aged 65. Kenya’s main opposition leader Raila Odinga attended the burial, having previously hailed Mr Tsvangirai as someone who fought for “justice for his country and…
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday launched the 10-year Cashew Development Plan, in Wenchi, in the Brong Ahafo Region, a plan aimed at diversifying Ghanaian agriculture. Recounting a commitment he made on 19th March, 2016, at Suma Ahenkro, in the Jaman North Constituency, President Akufo-Addo bemoaned the over-reliance of Ghanaian agriculture on the production and export of cocoa, in contrast with the situation in neigbouring Cote d’Ivoire. He noted that Cote d’Ivoire has succeeded in diversifying its agriculture, which included the production and export of other cash crops, and, as a result, earned that country some $12 billion from…
The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources has rejected perceptions that it is one of, if not, the worst-performing ministries after a year of the Akufo-Addo-led government. Sector Minister Joseph Kofi Adda says the recent issues at the Mallam market in Accra “is one example of what we have done”. Speaking on 3FM’s Sunrise on Tuesday, Mr Adda said a lot of underground work was done last year and this year will see the dividends paid. He stated, for instance, that his Ministry drafted four major documents including a 30-year strategic plan last year. Some have been tabled before cabinet,…
Europe has seen a big surge in measles cases in 2017, which the World Health Organization says is a tragedy after a record low of 5,273 cases in 2016. Cases increased four-fold, with more than 20,000 people affected and 35 deaths. Fifteen European region countries, including the UK, had large outbreaks. Measles cases were highest in Romania, Italy and Ukraine. People shunning vaccination is part of the problem, say experts. Although research published 20 years ago about a possible link between the MMR vaccine and autism has been discredited, the scare it created damaged some people’s trust of the vaccine.…
Parliament has unanimously approved former Attorney General Martin Alamisi Amidu as special prosecutor after attempts by a member of parliament to have the approval proceedings suspended failed. Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga East, Dr. Domining Ayine, had on Tuesday February 20 asked the Speaker to be guided by a suit he filed at the Supreme Court challenging Mr. Amidu’s eligibility. But his appeal was rejected by the speaker, paving the way for the House to debate the report of the Appointments Committee that recommended Mr. Amidu’s approval in its report submitted to the House today for consideration. Before the debate…
The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Joseph Kofi Adda, has seemingly justified death threats on Media General’s journalist Kwakye Afreh-Nuamah by accusing the journalist of unprofessionalism. Even though the minister emphasized that he does not support the threatening of journalists, he believes that the threat on Kwakye Afreh-Nuamah is not worthy of discussion as the integrity of the journalist is in question. “Let’s not look at the threat, let’s look at what he should be doing as a responsible professional journalist,” Mr Adda said. Following Kwakye Afreh-Nuamah’s constant criticisms and campaign on social media to get the ministry to…
The Board Chairman of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Hackman Owusu Agyemang, has hinted that COCOBOD is instituting measures to ensure that the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital at Akuapem Mampong in the Eastern Region is given the necessary support in order to offer the best quality health service delivery. The COCOBOD Chair stated that the honour given to Tetteh Quarshie by building the hospital should not be allowed to deteriorate. He stated this when he led a three-member committee set up by the Board of Directors of COCOBOD to pay a familiarization visit to the facility. The committee members included Nana…
