The Achimota student, who was jailed three years by a Juvenile Court for shooting his friend Lily Asibete to death at Tema, has appealed against his sentence. The student, according to court processes, held that the sentence of the Juvenile Court was harsh hence the appeal. When the matter was called at an Accra High Court, presided over by Mr Justice J. K. Dorgu, an Attorney from the Attorney’s General Department told the court that they have not been served with the court processes. The matter was therefore adjourned to December 12. The 17-year-old boy was jailed on the charge…
There was drama in Parliament on Friday when the Member of Parliament for Tarkwa Nsuaem Constituency brought in a gas cylinder for analysis in his submission to the debate on the 2018 budget statement. The Minority was alarmed about the MP’s action since the cylinder could have contained Liquified Petroleum Gas, LPG. George Duker stoked controversy when he used the gas cylinder in his demonstration of the LPG recycling module. But the Deputy Minority Leader, James Kluste Avedzi, said his behaviour was unparliamentary and questioned how the MP managed to sneak the cylinder into the House. The Majority Leader, however,…
Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim and Nafissatou Thiam of Belgium have been named the male and female World Athletes of the Year at the IAAF Athletics Awards 2017, held at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco on Friday (24). He won the world title in impressive fashion, clearing all of his heights up to his winning mark of 2.35m on…
In my opinion, no individual is born as an island unto himself or herself. People are born unto an environment where they grow up from childhood to adulthood and old age until death. That environment could be a family, the entire community, a tribe, ethnic group, a school or a workplace. How Can an Individual Attain Success in Life In this world we have choices as far as success in life is concerned. What is important is for the individual to make the right choice or choices that will lead the person to the attainment of success; be it riches,…
A surprise twist in Zimbabwe forced Comrade Robert Gabriel Mugabe to resign as president. The world was made to believe during the period that the ousted independent fighter was the first President of Zimbabwe. As Zimbabwe celebrates the swearing-in of Emmerson Mnangagwa, I went searching and found out that Comrade Mugabe was really the second and not the first President of Zimbabwe. The southern African country, Zimbabwe was a British colony from 1923 to 1980 known as Southern Rhodesia. The nation existed unrecognised state of Rhodesia until 1979, following its unilateral declaration of independence in 1965. It reconstituted itself under…

Hundreds of passengers as well as vehicles were stranded at the Yeji ferry station in Brong Ahafo Region. There were no ferries at the station due to the ongoing civil works on the Bupei and Yapei bridges in the Northern Region. Four days ago, the Yapei bridge, which is the main link between the northern and southern parts of Ghana, underwent civil repairs, compelling travellers to use other routes. The situation is said to be inconveniencing most travellers. Those from both the south and the north were still stranded on Friday, three days after the repair works began. Most of…
Several concerns have been expressed about indiscipline in many aspects of our Ghanaian lives which is a state of disorder because of lack of self control and self discipline of human behaviour, that is, the way we behave and do things in our daily lives, the way we speak to the elderly in the family, community and the society. Issues of respect and courtesy towards the elderly by the youth and true humility that the national anthem talks about are all challenges that must be collectively handled and eliminated in the society. For us, that is, as individuals, farmers, academia,…
A local Japanese politician has been criticised by lawmakers for trying to bring her baby to a council session. Yuka Ogata said she wanted to show how difficult it is for women to juggle careers and raise children. Kumamoto municipal assembly officials said she had violated assembly rules as visitors and observers are forbidden from the floor. After a lengthy discussion, Ms Ogata left the child with a friend and the session started 40 minutes late. The council says it will discuss her case and ways to support lawmakers with young children. Speaker Yoshitomo Sawada told reporters: “We would like…
A spotless gown. An almost impeccable tuxedo. Glittering rings. A convoy of fashionably decorated groomsmen and bridesmaids. One beautiful bride. One groom sporting his best wear ever. Love is about to happen! As love birds walk down the Ghanaian aisle every Saturday, one question that lingers on my mind is, “Do these understand what they do?” Probably if they did, they would have pondered over their decision to marry a little more. Hopefully if they did, they would have given divorce courts only little work to do. Of a truth, weddings have been in existence for ages. Though trends,…
