A member of the legal team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, says his party takes pride in giving the New Patriotic Party (NPP) a “credible” person to occupy the Office of the Special Prosecutor. According to him, the NPP could not find any person fit for the position within its ranks only to look over to their archrivals for someone. “We gave them Martin Amidu,” he said on TV3’s New Day on Tuesday. “We made him what he is,” he added, “with our probity and accountability.” Martin Amidu, a founder member of the NDC, is expected to…

Schoolgirls and teachers in north-eastern Nigeria have escaped an attack on a boarding school by Boko Haram jihadists, witnesses say. They say the militants in pick-up trucks arrived in the town of Dapchi, Yobe state, on Monday evening, shooting and setting off explosives. Alerted by the noise, staff and students were able to flee. In April 2014, Boko Haram kidnapped more than 270 girls from a school in the north-eastern town of Chibok. Residents and civilian militia in Dapchi say they believe the jihadists had planned to kidnap schoolgirls in their town too. After finding the school empty, the militants…
Fast-food chain KFC has closed hundreds of outlets across the UK after they ran out of chicken. Things were not so finger-licking good for disappointed fried chicken fans after problems with a new distribution system forced the closures. Last week, KFC switched its delivery contract to DHL, which blamed “operational issues” for the supply disruption. KFC has about 900 UK restaurants, with more than 80% run by franchisees. Closures have been reported in areas including London and the South East, the Midlands, East Anglia, the North East and Wales. Until last Tuesday, KFC’s chicken was delivered by South African-owned distribution…
Scientists have taken the first steps towards what they say could become a new blood and urine test for autism. Their study tested children with and without the condition and found higher levels of protein damage in those with the disorder. The researchers said the tests could lead ultimately to the earlier detection of the condition, which can be difficult to diagnose. But experts expressed caution, saying such a test was still a long way off. Protein damage Autism affects behaviour and particularly social interaction but it is difficult to spot and is not usually diagnosed before the age of…
The Dean of Studies and Research at the Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS), Dr Eric Oduro Osae, has questioned the credibility of a research conducted by Prof. Raymond Atuguba which suggests that Supreme Court rulings on political cases over the past 25 years have had partisan political leanings. The governance research expert and lawyer raises concerns about the validity of the data Prof Atuguba used in his research, saying his failure to validate his data makes the research findings unjustifiable. Speaking of 3FM’s Sunrise on Tuesday in reaction to the credibility of the research, Dr Osae said: “In research…
MDC-T vice president Advocate Nelson Chamisa and Ms Elizabeth Macheka, widow of the late MDC-T leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai, attended the funeral wake of the politician yesterday despite threats by family members that they would not be allowed near the event. Adv Chamisa together with his co-vice president Engineer Elias Mudzuri are embroiled in a leadership wrangle as both were claiming to be acting presidents of the opposition party. Mr Tsvangirai’s mother, Mrs Lydia Chibwe Tsvangirai, had threatened to commit suicide should Adv Chamisa and Ms Macheka be allowed to attend the funeral wake. Adv Chamisa is under fire for…

An anti-doping case has been opened against Russian medal-winning curler Alexander Krushelnitsky, says the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas). Krushelnitsky, who won bronze with his wife in the mixed doubles at the Winter Olympics on Tuesday, is suspected of testing positive for meldonium. Cas opened a case against the 25-year-old following a request from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). A hearing date has not been set and a B sample result is expected on Monday. More than 160 competitors are in the OAR team as their country was banned from the Games over “systemic” doping at Sochi 2014, which…
