Re-elected President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has bemoaned the depth of division within the recently unionized association, saying: “We must build bridges of unity, reconciliation and forgiveness”. Roland Affail Monney said the divisions became conspicuous in the run-up to Friday’s polls. “The spread of poison was incredible,” he said on TV3’s News 360 on Friday after he secured a Pyrrhic victory in the polls. READ: Afffail Monney re-elected GJA Prez “I was a target of some of the poisonous attacks from my opponents and their supporters,” he added but said he remained “unflappable because as a leader you…
Ghana’s leading media and communications firm Media General says it will engage the National Communications Authority (NCA) following the inclusion of 3FM, one of its subsidiary radio stations, in the list of defaulting media firms. The list by NCA contained 131 media stations accused of various infractions some which are non-payment of license renewals. But the inclusion of 3FM appears to have ruffled feathers of its mother company. “We want to state without equivocation that this allegation is false,” management said in a statement issued on Friday. “As a responsible corporate citizen, Media General has dutifully honoured all regulatory and…
Another week and the craze for football continues in the EPL. The clash of the Ayews in the English Premier League is becoming a regular fixture after both moved to England in 2015. Both brothers scored in their first EPL clash back in October, 2015 when Andre scored a late winner for Swansea City in their 2-1 win against Aston Villa. Ironically Jordan will be playing for Andre’s former team, Swansea, when they face each other this weekend at Wembley. The Ayews are likely to start for their respective clubs after both brothers were dropped by Ghana Coach Kwesi Appiah…
Roland Affail Monney has been re-elected as President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA). He polled 310 out of the total valid votes cast to beat contenders Lloyd Evans and Johnnie Aryeetey in polls held countrywide on Friday. Though he dropped votes in the major capital, the head of radio at state broadcaster Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) made inroads in the other regions. In the Brong Ahafo Region, for instance, he garnered 24 votes against Lloyd Evans’s 4. Johnnie Aryeetey had none. In the Upper West Region, RAM – as he is affectionately referred to in the newsroom – had…
The Minority in Parliament has slammed the National Communications Authority (NCA) over a recent exercise to impose sanctions on defaulting radio stations. About 131 stations have been affected with some facing closure. But in a statement issued by National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, who is the Ranking Member on the Communications Committee of Parliament, on Friday, NCA’s action appears to be “monetizing the right to free expression”. It said there could be a semblance of retribution against stations that have traditionally been ideologically opposed to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. “In light of the…
Flying from Paris to Accra takes six hours and 20 minutes, direct. But why fly when you can drive? One Ghanaian opted to take the road less traveled this summer, clocking 4,900 miles in just nine days. Why? For family and for country. Twenty-nine-year-old mechanical engineer Nicholas Afedi Donkoh drove all the way from his house in France to his hometown in Ghana to prove a point: that everyone deserves an adventure. “I just wanted the world to know that it’s not only white people who can go on such trips, but we blacks, too, can do that as well,”…
Senior Minister Yaw Osafo-Mafo has described illegal fishing as “galamsey on the seas” and so recommended tough measures in fighting the menace. “I think somehow we have to make a very strong passionate case,” said Mr Osafo-Mafo on Thursday at the closing ceremony of a three-day Conference on Fisheries and Coastal Environment, organized by USAID under its Feed The Future programme. “From what I have observed and read, we are doing a lot of identification, doing a lot of talking about the problem [but] our efforts to resolve the problem have not been successful,” he admitted. He stressed: “We must…
The 12 labour unions fighting government over the second-tier pensions have suspended their intentions to embark on an indefinite strike on Friday. Under the umbrella body Forum for Public Sector Registered Pension Schemes, the 12 labour unions called on their members to remain calm over the latest decision. “The Forum has resolved to suspend temporarily the intended 29 September 2017 indefinite nationwide strike action communicated earlier through our press release dated 14 September 2017 whilst the joint technical committee completes its work,” spokesperson Isaac Bampoe-Addo said at a press briefing on Thursday. The decision to suspend prosecution of the threat…
