The Government has announced that approximately $1.470 billion was paid at the end of last year to “rescue and restore Ghana’s energy sector”. According to a press release issued on Monday, January 12 by the Ministry of Finance, the payment covers the World Bank Partial Risk Guarantee, outstanding gas invoices owed ENI and Vitol for electricity generation as well as legacy debts to Independent Power Producers (IPPs). The debt on the partial risk guarantee (PRG) was $597.15 million, inclusive of interest, while that on the gas invoices was $480 million. A total of $393 million was settled with the IPPs.…

President John Dramani Mahama has left Accra for Davos, Switzerland for the 2026 World Economic Forum. President Mahama left Accra on Sunday. According to a statement from the Presidency, Mr Mahama will stop over in the United Kingdom, where he will hold meetings with the Coordinators of the Accra Reset Initiative. President Mahama is expected to hold bilateral talks with other world leaders on the sidelines of the Forum.

The Embassy of Ghana in Washington DC has confirmed the arrest of former Minister of Finance, Kenneth Ofori-Atta, by the Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) in the United States. It said in a press release that it immediately took the necessary steps to verify the circumstances surrounding the matter. Nine suspects have been remanded into prison custody over an alleged assault on police officers in Obuasi as captured in a viral video. The officers were said to be on duty at Tweapease Senior High School Park, where they were attacked by the suspects together with others.
