Non-performing loans (NPL) increased to GH¢6.4 billion in February 2017 from GH¢4.7 billion in February 2016, according to the latest Banking Sector Report. According to the report, the increase in the stock of NPLs, with no commensurate increase in gross advances, led to a higher NPL ratio of 17.7 per cent in February 2017, compared with 15.6 per cent in the same period last year. The deterioration in asset quality according to the Central Bank s was largely attributed to the Asset Quality Review of bank loans in 2016 which led to the downgrade of some existing loans by banks.…
Customs and Border Protection officers at New York’s JFK airport said they captured two more passengers who attempted to smuggle drugs by strapping packages of cocaine to their legs. The most recent seizure came when two men tried to bring more than 10 kilos of cocaine into the United States on April 19, officers said. Both men allegedly had the drugs taped to their legs under their clothing, and one man taped the drugs to his back. The minister for Special Development Initiatives, Hawa Koomson has assured Ghanaians of revamping the Bolgatanga meat factory in the Upper East region which has been abandoned since 1995. A South African court has annulled initial agreements the government reached with three countries to help it build nuclear power stations. The deals with Russia, the US and South Korea were unlawful, the court ruled. The government failed to hold public hearings and a parliamentary debate over its plans, it added. Environmental groups said they welcomed the ruling, pointing out it came on the eve of the anniversary of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. This is because some members of the Ghana Hotels Association have revealed that the numerous fees charged by the various regulatory bodies are gradually kicking them out of business.
