The Minister of Interior has urged members of the public to avoid unnecessary movements as most parts of the country’s capital have been submerged in floods due to Monday morning’s heavy rains.
“As a precautionary measure, members of the public are advised to remain where they are until conditions improve,” a statement issued by Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak said.
“Those who are safely at home are urged to stay at home, while those who are at their workplaces or other safe locations should remain there until it is safe to travel.
“Unnecessary movement should be avoided.”
The rains in Accra and other parts of the middle and southern belt of the country have left many residents stranded.
Roads have been submerged in the floods and most motorists at risk.
“Motorists and pedestrians are strongly advised not to attempt to drive or walk through flooded roads, bridges or waterways, as floodwaters can rise rapidly and pose significant danger to life and property.”
The sector minister announced that the officers of the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Armed Forces and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have been deployed “to monitor the situation, assist affected persons, manage traffic, and undertake rescue operations where required”.
Residents in flood-prone areas have been been advised to move to higher grounds.
