Bawumia jabs Mahama over ‘indecision’ & ‘incompetence’ to select running mate

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has taken a swipe at former President John Dramani Mahama for his failure to name a running mate with five months to go to the presidential elections.

Dr Bawumia himself received overwhelming endorsement by the members of the National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Saturday, June 27 to partner President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the fourth time into an election.

The Vice President expressed gratitude to his leader for sticking with him particularly in 2012 and 2016 after their first unsuccessful campaign in 2008.

The unveiling of the two makes the NPP the first party to officially name its presidential and vice presidential candidates for the December 7 elections.

Nonetheless, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was the first party to elect a flagbearer for the elections.

But the circumstances of Covid-19 had stalled the selection of a running mate for former president John Dramani Mahama, allowing the NPP to do so ahead of the NDC. He has, however, stated on several platforms that he has already decided on who his running mate is.

“I have a firm idea who I want my running mate to be,” Mr Mahama had stated last month.

He told supporters of the party in his last Facebook Live address that he is waiting for the Council of Elders and the National Executive Committee (NEC) to meet for him to make that person known to them.

But addressing a select few members of NPP’s National Congress at the Alisa Hotel after his endorsement, Dr Bawumia insinuated that Mr Mahama is simply not decisive on his choice and not as a result of the pandemic.

“The best running mate in the world will not make a difference if the president is indecisive or incompetent,” the Vice President jabbed.

“I am thankful that in president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, I have a strong, decisive, incorruptible and competent president to work for.”

The Vice President outlined some of the achievements of the government so far that put it in pole position to retain power.

“We have delivered and are delivering on at least 78 per cent of the promises we made to the people of Ghana and across the spectrum of economic and social policies.

“We have not only delivered on our promises, [but] we have performed much better than the incompetent alternative.”

Dr Bawumia said Ghanaians should not allow the NDC to return “to give us an additional dose of their incompetence”.

“I know they don’t read,” he jabbed further, “but I entreat them to take a look at the data to get better informed on our performance vis-a-vis theirs.

“They should not only read the data but they should try to understand it so that they don’t mislead Ghanaians like their General Mosquito tried to do after the verdict of the Supreme Court on Thursday.”
