The Naa Gbewa Palace in Yendi has announced the untimely passing of Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, the Overlord of the Dagbon kingdom.
The announcement was made on Monday, July 13 with reports that he died over the weekend.
Ya-Na Abukari II was enskinnned after the resolution of a 16-year conflict that led to several lives lost.
He was born around 1940’s into a Dagbon royal family at Mion to Mahama II, the Ya-Na from 1938 to 6 February 1948.
His mother, Ayishetu, was a princess from Kulunkpegu, a small community near Chaazaadaanyili.
Ya-Na Abukari II first undertook public duties as the chief of Kpunkpono until he was elevated to Savelugu; one of three gate skins to succeed the Ya-Na.
He became the 41st Ya-Na after his enskinment in 2019.
His son has been appointed Kampakuya Na to serve as Regent of the Dagbon Kingdom.
He will serve as the traditional caretaker to oversee the Kingdom’s affairs on behalf of the Dagbon throne in accordance with Dagbon custom.
