The Supreme Court has given the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) the go-ahead to compile a new voter register for the December 7 elections.
In its judgment, the Court ordered that any case filed or would be filed against the compilation of the register is nulled.
There was confusion, however, among lawyers and journalists as to whether the Commission has been ordered to include the existing voter’s ID cards as identification for registration or not.
The apex court reiterated that the EC has the mandate to carried out its duty as by law.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) went to court, praying that the EC is enjoined to allow eligible Ghanaians to use the existing voter’s ID card as proof of citizenship.
The largest opposition party had earlier challenged the EC’s decision to compile a new register but abandoned that relief after the Court asked it to clarify what relief it wants granted.
A native of Breman-Kokoso in the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District of the Central Region, Mark Takyi-Banson, also challenged the decision of the Commission to use the Ghana Card and the Ghanaian passport as the only identification documents.
He also wanted a birth certificate to be accepted.
His suit was consolidated with that of the NDC.
