The Electoral Commission will from Tuesday, September 10 exhibit the voters register at all the 30,702 polling stations across the country to update the electoral roll ahead of the district level elections and the referendum.
The exhibition which will end on September 17, will start from 7:00 a.m to 6:00p.m each day, including Saturday and Sunday.
Five different voters registers compiled in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2019, will be on display for voters to verify their details and make amendments or insertions where necessary, the EC deputy chair, Dr Bossman Eric Asare announced Monday.
Also, the exhibition is to give opportunity to persons whose relatives have died, to remove the names of the deceased from the register.
“Persons volunteering such information will have to produce the voter ID card of the deceased person and a proof of death of that person, e.g. death certificates or burial permit,” he said.
Dr Asare stated exhibition officers will conduct background checks to confirm that the person is indeed deceased before the name could be removed from the register.
During the exhibition exercise, he said, objection to names of unqualified persons in the register could be raised at the various polling centres.
“Any person entitled to be registered as a voter may object to the inclusion of names of persons on the provisional voters register if he or she believes that they are unqualified to be registered as voters,” he said
He reiterated that persons who are not 18 years, not Ghanaians, not a resident or ordinary resident in the locality are unqualified to be a voter.
A district registration review officer, he said, would be given the responsibility to determine each complaints and objections that will be raised during the exhibition exercise and “also endorse the provisional voters register to authenticate it”.
Decisions reached will be communicated in writing to the EC, claimants and the persons, after which he said “the Commission shall within 14 days after parties to the case have been informed, comply with the decision of the district registration review officer unless a certified notification of an appeal to the High Court is brought to its attention”
The deputy chair urged registered voters to show interest in the exercise to assist the commission “update and produce a credible voters register”
Referendum
Meanwhile, the EC has explained the upcoming referendum is not to decide on the election of MMDCEs as is being held by some people.
Dr Asare said the referendum is to amend Article 55(3) of the constitution to introduce a multi-party system of elections at the local level “ because this Article is entrenched”.
“The law requires that, at least 40% of voter turn-out is required and at least 75% Yes vote is required to amend this article,” he said.
